Keanu Reeves is unlikely face of Cyberpunk 2077

Nerds hate it when the things they love are sidelined by extraneous elements. Comic book readers have never stopped bemoaning the fact that Sandiego Comic-Con has become so thoroughly infused with pop culture that the comic books the convention was created to celebrate have become a second thought.

Celebrities in video games are nothing new. When Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood became a big hit in Netflix’s House of Cards, Activision made quite a big deal about the appearance he was slated to make in the next Call of Duty game.

Celebrities cannot improve the quality of a game but their presence can bring some much-needed hype. Cyberpunk 2077 is an adaptation of a tabletop game called Cyberpunk 2020 from the late 1980s.

The game takes place in a dystopian future were cybernetic implants have become commonplace. With corrupt governments having driven society to ruin, you must step into the shoes of V, a mercenary in Night City, California.

What must you do as V? We don’t know yet. The game’s main story is still shrouded in mystery. Gamers are losing their minds over this title. Few people remember the original tabletop version. And yet, when CD Project, a polish company, revealed in 2012 that it would bring the game back to life, they generated a significant amount of interest.

CD Project is responsible for The Witcher, one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time. It is little wonder that every gamer and their mother can’t wait to see how they will transition from fantasy to science fiction.

The game is primarily an RPG but with FPS elements. Players will have the opportunity to customize V to their liking, shaping the journey the mercenary will undertake, including V’s romantic trials.

Not only will your customization of V affect the way the NPCs react to the hero but you only get the ‘Game Over’ screen when your character dies.  You don’t get it when you fail a mission. Rather, the game will carry on, forcing you to contend with the consequences of your mistakes. This will, in turn, affect the various components of the story.

People went to the 2019 E3 convention determined to discover the release date of Cyberpunk 2077. That they got; they were also treated to a CGI trailer that ended with Keanu Reeves, Mr Babayaga himself, walking into frame.

Days later, everyone that cares has watched the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer. And yet all anyone can talk about is Keanu Reeves. You would expect this hubbub to rub hardcore gamers the wrong way. After all, they have spent years waiting for this game, and now the celebrity appearance is dominating the conversation.

But, if anything, Keanu’s presence has only augmented the excitement surrounding this game. Maybe this speaks to the calm, unobtrusive aura surrounding the actor. Maybe the popularity of the John Wick movies is working in his favor. Whatever the case, everyone seems to agree that Keanu’s presence is actually enhancing the interest in Cyberpunk 2077.
